Heard all sorts of advice about how you should behave at work, but wondering if there are elements of behavior you could adopt to better your performance and reputation in the workplace? The following steps will give you an edge in the workplace.

Steps

    1
Arrive early, but do not work late. A lot of emphasis is placed on being punctual, but many people forget one important element of being punctual - going home on time. Arriving early denotes a commitment to the job you've accepted, while leaving late each day gives away that you have lack-luster time management skills. Impress your employer by conscientiously arriving early enough to prepare yourself for the work day ahead, work while you are at work, then leave when you are supposed to leave.

Never lose sight of the big pictures. There are two big pictures you must concern yourself with in the workplace: 1) Your ultimate professional and personal goals and how your present work prepares or advances those goals, and 2) The ultimate goals of the company you work for and how you can help achieve those goals. Knowing how your work relates to your ultimate goals in life will give you self-assurance and provide motivation for you to advance your company and yourself. If you fail to step back from your daily work routine and carefully examine where (or if) these two big pictures intersect, from time to time, you will begin to lose perspective, which often results in a downward-sliding performance on the job.

Be yourself. When you applied for the job you have, you behaved as yourself at your best. You employer hired you because there was something about your personality they thought their business might benefit from, financially. Resist the temptation to begin to emulate the behavior of your co-workers. Employers are frequently disappointed to see a new-hire who was lively and enthusiastic during the hiring process become morose and sullen after spending a few days with his/her other employees. It takes time for people to adjust to a new person in the workplace; give your co-workers time to adjust to your personality rather than changing your behavior to match theirs.

Never hesitate to promote the advancement of another worthy candidate.Employers appreciate employees who confidently promote and support other good workers. When you work hard and consistently help further your company's goals, you become a trusted voice; use your voice to help others who are worthy of advancement. If you play dirty in order to gain position in the company, your ineptitude for the job will become apparent very quickly and may cost you future promotions and a great deal of money. Allow your employer to evaluate your work and skills, and determine where you fit best in the company.

Be interested in what you are doing at work, and show it. Employers become more confident in your skills and abilities as they see you treating your work like it is a valuable contribution to the company.

Be aware of, and improve, the safety of your surroundings. Take a moment to look around you for potential hazards in your workplace and fix them. Employers appreciate those who take the initiative to create a safer work environment, over those who constantly point out where easy improvements can/should be made, yet take no action themselves. In other words, if you see debris littering the floor of your workplace, don't walk around it to inform your boss that someone needs to do a little picking up before somebody slips and falls, just pick up what you see and move on with your day.

Be cautious about the compromises you make. If you feel that you are being asked to compromise someone else's safety, refuse. However, if you feel that you need to compromise with a fellow worker for the benefit of the company goals, do so with dignity and grace. You may have an idea you've become very attached to, but there is nearly always room for improvement, so be quick to recognize the merit in the ideas of others and how they can be incorporated into your own plans, or vice versa.
  8. Behave at Work Step 8.jpg

Treat everyone you encounter with dignity and respect. While some people can be very difficult to interact with in the workplace, when you treat them poorly you should remember that you are negatively affecting your career opportunities with the company. Your co-workers were as carefully selected as you were, so showing contempt for and disrespect for any co-worker you encounter shows a disregard for the intellect of your employer.
  9. Behave at Work Step 9.jpg

Don't criticize others. It can be very tempting to critique the work or effectiveness of others in the workplace, but hold your tongue if you want to enjoy success on the job. Discourage your fellow workers from criticizing co-workers to you; how others perform their tasks is not your concern, it's your employer's.
  10. Behave at Work Step 10.jpg
    10
Listen well and apply what you hear. It's easier to hear important details and new opportunities if you listen well. If you are a good worker, you'll likely hear about your employer's personal preferences and new job opportunities before other workers. Make mental notes on what you hear so you can promote a candidate you think would be most useful in the new position and/or to incorporate what you can of your employer's personal preferences into your work, or work style.

Bring something extra to the table. Do your work well and completely, then look for ways you can do a little extra to help the company you work for reach its goals.
